The Toronto Xiangqi Association is a non-profit organization registered in Ontario, Canada. It was established in 1988, and became a member of the World Xiangqi Federation in 1993. It has been a member of the Canadian Xiangqi Federation since the CXF was founded in 2008. As the official representative of these two organizations, we have sent individual players and teams to many national and international tournaments.
Our ongoing mission is to make friends with Xiangqi players from all over the world, jointly promote the development of Xiangqi, and organize promotional activities.
In February, the Toronto Xiangqi Association and the City of Markham held the 2025 Markham Xiangqi Cup. Despite the heavy snow, this event featured an international tournament, as well as demonstrations of the game for beginners, a Xiangqi puzzle competition, and opportunities for casual play. The event resulted from our long association with the City of Markham. It concluded with a gala dinner at the Hilton Hotel Markham, with speeches, music and culture.
The tournament was decided by a match between the tournament’s top two players. This was held in the Markham City Hall council chamber. Li MingJian of New York City won the match and took first place. Peng Bo, also of New York City, took second. Congratulations to both of them.
Toronto’s 41st Xiangqi championship took place at New Kennedy Square in Markham on October 5, 2024. First place went to YunKai Yu, second to James Sung, and third to Loi Nguyen. Their names have been added to our championship tables.

Xiangqi, or Chinese chess, has existed in its present form since the Song Dynasty (960 to 1279). A recent and very popular variant is Jieqi, or Undercover Xiangqi, where the pieces are revealed as the game is played.
We welcome inquiries about membership, and about all other aspects of the game of Xiangqi.
