The World Xiangqi Championships are coming to Canada.
The 16th World Xiangqi Championship and the second World Youth Xiangqi Championships will take place at the Hotel Vancouver Airport in Richmond BC from October 7 to 11.
The tournaments are being organized by the Canadian Xiangqi Federation and the Vancouver Xiangqi Association in association with the World Xiangqi Federation. Detailed information in Chinese and English can be found on the CXF site.
The tournament is sponsored by the Hong Kong Youshi Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd and will be named the “Prored Cup” after the Prored beauty salon equipment developed by Guangdong Moliyunyu Trading Co.
The World Xiangqi Championships have been held every two years since 1990, and include sections for women and players from outside the Chinese world. The reigning champion is Wang Tianyi of BeiJing, China. The reigning women’s champion is Tang Dan, also of BeiJing. The winner of the 2017 non-Chinese section was Joep Nabuurs of the Netherlands.
The tournament is always run using the Swiss system. This year there will be eight rounds, two per day.
This will be the third time that the World Xiangqi Championships have been held outside of Asia. In 2005, they were held in Paris, and in 2015 in Munich.
The World Youth Xiangqi Championships will take the form of tournaments for girls and boys under the ages of 16 and 12.
Canada’s Xiangqi clubs have been enthusiastic supporters of the World Xiangqi Championships since the beginning, and have sent many teams to compete in all three sections. It is fitting that they should finally be held in Canada.
